Hello,
I just finished installing PACSONE Premium Edition and I'm getting ready to test it, but a workflow/functionality question came up and I can't find the answer in the forum.
Honestly, I'm not sure if this should be a feature of the modality or the PACS server, but here it goes the question. I'll use PacsOne mostly for Ultrasound modalities. Within the study, there are several parameters that are measured on the studies and they are discrete data (like dimensions, velocities, gradients, etc). The question is whether PacsOne has the ability to read these parameters out of a DICOM image or header and send them over to an EMR through HL7, or that is a functionality of the modality itself.
I guess my question is more toward the DICOM format/standard itself but if you can help me I'll really appreciate it. I've been working in healthcare for 7 years and I do understand HL7, but I just started out with DICOM.
I know the EMR or Practice Management can send HL7 messages with demographics and orders so PacsOne can generate a MWL and send it to the modalities, but my question comes "after the study is done". I'm not sure how to capture those discrete data fields and export them through HL7 to the EMR to finalize the report there (if there is any way). If I can't do it, people will have to manually enter all that data into the EMR.
Thank you so much for your help.
Kindly regards,
Jorge
HL7 interface to EMR
Logically it seems to make more sense to have the input modalities to send any updated parameters to the EMR via HL7 messages, since they are the creator of such discrete data. But you would need to check with the vendor of the input modalities to see if they have such capabilities and in what HL7 message format the EMR is expected to receive such updates.
As far as PacsOne Server is concerned, such updated parameters of the discrete data can be updated as part of the Dicom images if they are embedded within the images.

Thank you pacsone!
Yes, you are absolutely right. The modality itself captures the data and based on the "software package" that it comes with, it stores discrete data. I'm positive that these modalities don't "talk" HL7.
That's why I thought that maybe, if the modality is sending out these values embedded in DICOM files within some TAGs that can be somehow identified, then I could have PacsOne to read those values and create HL7 messages with OBX segments to be sent to the EMR.
But as you pointed out, the key question is how my modalities are exporting that data. I'm using HP5500 and HP7500. I'll contact the rep to see if he can help me to get the information from these modalities.
Thank you for your help!
